What is an MPRN and where do I find it?

The straight answer

An MPRN — Meter Point Reference Number — is the unique number identifying a gas supply point, usually six to ten digits. It is on your gas bill, and it stays with the property when suppliers or occupiers change. It is the gas equivalent of an electricity MPAN.

Why quotes need it

Without an MPRN a gas price is an estimate against a postcode. With it, the supplier can see the supply's characteristics and annual quantity and price the actual meter. It is also what you need to serve notice, register a change of tenancy or submit a VAT declaration, so it is worth keeping with your contract paperwork rather than digging it out each time.

Ask an energy specialist

If your question is not answered above, send it to us. A specialist answers personally, normally within one working day. No sales call, no obligation — and if the answer is "your deal is fine", that is what you will get.

We use your question to answer you and, if it is a good one, to write a public answer — anonymised, with nothing that identifies you or your business. See our privacy notice.

Want this checked against your own bill?
