Work out what your energy should cost
Put in what you use and what you are paying now. The calculator works out your annual cost, then shows the same usage priced at the current market band for a new fixed contract. It is an estimate, not a quote — a real price depends on your meter, postcode, contract length and the market on the day — but it will tell you very quickly whether you are in the right area or a long way out.
What the calculator is doing
Annual cost is your usage multiplied by the unit rate, plus the standing charge for 365 days, plus the Climate Change Levy at 0.801p per kWh, plus VAT on the total. The comparison prices the same usage at the current market band, holding your standing charge constant, because that is the part a new contract usually changes least.
Two things the calculator cannot know: whether your usage profile suits the cheapest tariffs, and whether you qualify for 5% VAT — which would take the levy off as well. The VAT and CCL checker takes a minute and is worth doing first.
If the number looks wrong
Check the unit rate and standing charge you entered against the bill rather than against memory — the two most common input errors are entering pounds instead of pence, and using a monthly standing charge instead of a daily one. If the output still looks off, send us the bill and we will tell you what is going on.
