Can my business switch water supplier?

The straight answer

In England, yes — the business water retail market opened to competition in April 2017. You are switching the retailer who bills you and handles the account, not the company that supplies the water, so nothing physical changes. In Scotland the market has been open longer; in Wales, eligibility is more limited.

What actually changes

The same wholesaler owns the pipes, treats the water and deals with leaks and emergencies. The retailer bills you, reads the meter, handles queries and manages the account. Switching changes the second of those and nothing else — there is no interruption and no work at the premises.

What you are switching for

Before you switch, check the bill

Two checks are worth more than most switches: whether you are being charged for surface water drainage you do not send to the sewer — see what is a surface water drainage rebate? — and whether your meter reads are actual rather than estimated. Fixing either is worth more than a percentage point on the rate.

How to do it

You need the SPID (supply point identifier) from your bill, the site address and recent consumption. Contracts are typically one to three years. We price water alongside energy — see business water — and if your current arrangement is already competitive we will say so.

Ask an energy specialist

If your question is not answered above, send it to us. A specialist answers personally, normally within one working day. No sales call, no obligation — and if the answer is "your deal is fine", that is what you will get.

We use your question to answer you and, if it is a good one, to write a public answer — anonymised, with nothing that identifies you or your business. See our privacy notice.

Want this checked against your own bill?

Email a recent bill to info@utilitiesms.co.uk and a specialist will check your rates, VAT, levies and contract end date against the live market — free, usually the same working day. If your deal is already good, we will tell you to keep it.
