Who supplies the energy at premises I've just moved into?
Whoever supplied the previous occupier — and from the day you take occupation you are their customer on a deemed contract, at rates that commonly run 35–45p per kWh for electricity. Find the supplier through the industry databases, tell them you have moved in, give a meter reading, then price a proper contract.

Finding out who it is
- Electricity: call the Meter Point Administration Service on 0870 608 1524, or ask your local network operator. They can tell you the supplier and your MPAN from the address.
- Gas: use the Find My Supplier service, or call the Meter Number Helpline on 0870 608 1524, which will give you the MPRN and the registered supplier.
- Quickest of all: ask the landlord, the agent or the outgoing occupier for a recent bill. It has the supplier, the meter numbers and the rates on it.
Why the rate is so bad
A deemed contract is what you get when energy is supplied without an agreed contract. It carries no negotiated price and no cap protection, and it exists to cover the supplier's risk on a customer it knows nothing about. Every day you leave it in place costs money — see deemed and out-of-contract rates.
What to do in the first week
- Read the meters on the day you take occupation and photograph them with the serial numbers visible. This is the single most useful thing you will do.
- Tell the supplier you are the new occupier, giving the date and the readings, and ask them to open an account in your name.
- Price a contract. Deemed contracts can be left at any time with no termination fee, so there is nothing to wait for. The market for new SME fixed electricity is currently 22–30p per kWh, and gas 6–9p per kWh.
Do not pay bills addressed to the previous occupier, and do not ignore them either — return them with the date you took occupation.
Ask an energy specialist
If your question is not answered above, send it to us. A specialist answers personally, normally within one working day. No sales call, no obligation — and if the answer is "your deal is fine", that is what you will get.
Want this checked against your own bill?
Email a recent bill to info@utilitiesms.co.uk and a specialist will check your rates, VAT, levies and contract end date against the live market — free, usually the same working day. If your deal is already good, we will tell you to keep it.
