Can I leave my business energy contract early?
Usually not without paying for it. A business energy contract is a commercial agreement with no statutory cooling-off period once it is live, and leaving early normally means a termination fee based on the supplier's lost margin on your remaining volume. The exceptions are a contract you never validly agreed to, a site you no longer occupy, and the short window before a new contract starts.

Why business contracts are different from domestic ones
Domestic energy contracts come with a 14-day cooling-off period. Business ones do not. Once you have verbally or electronically agreed a contract and the supplier has registered it, you are committed for the term, and the supplier has bought your projected volume on the wholesale market on that basis. That purchase is what the termination fee pays for.
The exits that do exist
- Before it goes live. Many suppliers allow a short window between agreement and the contract start date. This varies by supplier and is not a legal right, so ask immediately.
- You are leaving the premises. A change of tenancy ends your liability at the meter from the date you hand over, provided you tell the supplier and give a final reading. See business energy when moving premises.
- The contract was not validly agreed. If it was signed by someone without authority, or the terms you were quoted are not the terms on the contract, that is a dispute worth raising in writing.
- You are a micro business and it was rolled over. Rollovers have their own rules — see do business energy contracts auto-renew?
What to do instead
In most cases the better move is not to break the contract but to price the next one properly and serve notice now, so that you are never in a position where the supplier sets your rate by default. If you are paying well above the current market — roughly 22–30p per kWh for a new SME fixed electricity contract — it is still worth having the numbers checked. Sometimes the termination fee is smaller than the saving over the remaining term. Sometimes it is not, and we will tell you so.
