Business energy in Leicester
Businesses in Leicester buy energy in the same national market as everyone else, but the network element of the bill is regional: Leicester sits in the National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands) distribution area for electricity and Cadent (East Midlands) for gas. What is local about your bill, and what is not
Roughly a fifth to a quarter of a typical business electricity bill is network cost, and that element is set by the regional network company rather than by your supplier. In Leicester that is National Grid Electricity Distribution (East Midlands) for electricity and Cadent (East Midlands) for gas. You cannot shop around for it, and neither can anybody else in the city.
Everything else — the wholesale energy, the supplier's margin, the standing charge, the contract terms — is competitive, and that is where the difference between two similar businesses on the same street comes from. Current market bands are 22–30p per kWh for a new SME fixed electricity contract and 6–9p per kWh for gas, with standing charges around 45–65p a day.
