Business energy in Birmingham
Businesses in Birmingham buy energy in the same national market as everyone else, but the network element of the bill is regional: Birmingham sits in the National Grid Electricity Distribution (West Midlands) distribution area for electricity and Cadent (West Midlands) for gas. What is local about your bill, and what is not
Roughly a fifth to a quarter of a typical business electricity bill is network cost, and that element is set by the regional network company rather than by your supplier. In Birmingham that is National Grid Electricity Distribution (West Midlands) for electricity and Cadent (West Midlands) for gas. You cannot shop around for it, and neither can anybody else in the city.
Everything else — the wholesale energy, the supplier's margin, the standing charge, the contract terms — is competitive, and that is where the difference between two similar businesses on the same street comes from. Current market bands are 22–30p per kWh for a new SME fixed electricity contract and 6–9p per kWh for gas, with standing charges around 45–65p a day.

Three things worth checking, wherever you are
- Has your contract lapsed? Out-of-contract rates run 35–45p per kWh and are the most expensive electricity in Britain. The end date should be on your bill.
- Are you on the right VAT rate? Low-usage sites, charities and premises with 60% or more domestic use qualify for 5% VAT and no Climate Change Levy at 0.801p per kWh — reclaimable four years back. Check in a minute.
- Is the meter reading actual or estimated? A run of estimates is a catch-up bill waiting to happen.
