Understand your business energy bill, line by line
Every business energy bill reduces to the same equation: (unit rate × kWh used) + (standing charge × days) + Climate Change Levy + VAT — plus capacity charges on half-hourly supplies. Five numbers decide what you pay: your unit rate, your standing charge, your annual kWh, your VAT rate, and your contract end date. Find those five and you understand the bill.

The lines that appear on every bill
| Line | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Unit rate (p/kWh) | The price of each unit of energy. May be split day/night/evening&weekend on multi-rate meters. | Benchmark it — new fixed SME deals run roughly 22–30p/kWh in 2026. |
| Standing charge (p/day) | Fixed daily fee covering networks and administration, payable even at zero usage. | 45–65p/day is typical for ordinary supplies; see Standing charges explained. |
| MPAN / MPRN | Your electricity and gas meter identities. The 13-digit MPAN bottom line identifies the exact supply. | Quotes priced without it are guesses — see What is an MPAN?. |
| Consumption (kWh) | Units used in the period, from actual or estimated reads. | An E next to reads means estimated. Strings of estimates end in catch-up bills — submit reads or get a smart meter. |
| Climate Change Levy | Government environmental tax, itemised separately — 0.801p/kWh for 2026/27. | Reduced-VAT customers should not be paying it: check your eligibility. |
| VAT | 20% standard on business energy; 5% for eligible customers. | Low usage, charities and mixed domestic use qualify for 5% — refundable four years back. |
| Capacity / availability (kVA) | Half-hourly supplies only: a charge for reserved network capacity. | Paying for far more kVA than your maximum demand? Read this. |
| Contract end date | Shown on most bills (mandatory for micro-businesses). | The most valuable number on the page — diarise it, or let us. |
Where DUoS and TNUoS fit
Distribution (DUoS) and transmission (TNUoS) charges pay for the wires that carry power to your premises. On most SME bills they are baked into the unit rate and standing charge rather than itemised; larger half-hourly contracts often show them as pass-through lines. Either way you are paying them — and TNUoS rose sharply in April 2026, which is why standing charges are climbing across the market.
Three red flags worth a second look
- The words “deemed”, “out of contract” or “variable” anywhere on the bill — you are on the most expensive rates in Britain. Deemed & out-of-contract rates explains the escape route.
- 20% VAT on a site that is low-usage, charitable or partly residential — potentially four years of refunds waiting.
- A unit rate you cannot explain against the current market — the renewal you signed without comparing is exactly what renewal letters are priced for.

Common questions
What are the five numbers that matter on a business energy bill?
Unit rate (p/kWh), standing charge (p/day), annual consumption (kWh), VAT rate, and contract end date. Together they determine what you pay now and what you will pay next.
Why is my bill estimated and does it matter?
An 'E' beside a reading means the supplier guessed. Consecutive estimates drift from reality and end in a large catch-up bill. Submit regular reads or request a smart meter — accurate data also gets you sharper quotes.
What is the difference between MPAN and MPRN?
MPAN identifies an electricity supply (13-digit core, bottom line of the number box); MPRN identifies a gas supply (6–10 digits). Both stay with the property, not the occupier or supplier.
What is the Climate Change Levy on my bill?
A government environmental tax on business energy, itemised separately at 0.801p per kWh for 2026/27 (it rose from 0.775p on 1 April 2026). Customers who qualify for 5% VAT are exempt, as are some energy-intensive industries with Climate Change Agreements.
Can you check a bill without me switching supplier?
Yes. The audit is free and carries no obligation — many findings (VAT, CCL, capacity, billing errors) are corrected with your existing supplier without any switch at all.
